My Space, My Time(TM) - by Daniel Schell
My Space, My Time book image

By special arrangement with Clic Music, "My Space, My Time", is now available in the United States. Author Daniel Schell's famous method fully revealed in TextBook along with Songbook of repertoire and exercises. These books work together as a set and are great for all touchstylists.

In the "TextBook" Daniel explains his graphical "C-dot" system. This lets the player to see the notes as clearly as one does on a keyboard. Daniel also explains his "mirror 4ths tuning". This system of tuning the bass in 4ths permits you to make identical movements in right and left hands to play identical musical figures. Proponents of this tuning say it allows for easier sight reading along with effortless execution of conventional bass lines.

Other topics covered in the TextBook are: fingering, position playing, sight-reading, tunings, hand position, basic scales and modes, exceptional fingering concept, inner counting system, two handed play, harmony and more. The TextBook has numerous diagrams and photographs showing hand and finger positions. There is a thorough Bibliography and complete Index.

The companion Songbook in entitled "Daily Exercises and Thesaurus". From the "Daily Exercises" you will learn reading in both clefs along with basic rhythm exercises to make your fingers steady and sure.

The "Thesaurus" or Songbook section has many song arrangements, in all styles, at different levels of difficulty. Basic songs include the traditional "Frere Jacques" and Haydn's "Symphonie Suprise". There are intermediate compositions like "Bourree" by J.S. Bach and "Petite Pause" by Jim Lampi, plus advanced pieces like "Good Friday" by Volker Rein and "Vienna Carmen" by Daniel Schell. Fingering is given for either bass tunings of 4ths or 5ths.

Excerpt from My Space, My Time  -  The sight-reading process.
"To be a good sight-reader, the player first has to develop an excellent note reading ability. He should reach the point where he actually grabs a whole bar at first sight. Exercises involve reading pieces of music without playing: recognizing the notes, the interval between them, finally the rhythms. He should then be able to transpose onto the board what he has just read. To do this, he applies the interval system of position we just studied. He always memorizes the last note he just played, and calculates from there where the new note is located. To do this with two hands involves a nearly instinctive knowledge of his space. Exercises start with the practice of scales by intervals."

Daniel Schell is a composer and tap guitar player working in Belgium. His group, Karo, has three CDs, "If Windows They Have", "The Secret of Bwlch" and their latest, "Gira Girasole". Daniel has conducted the European Tap Seminar every summer for many years and has refined his unique teaching method with hundreds of students. His first opera, "Hygiene de l'assassin", was premiered fall of 1995. "My Space, My Time" presents a new and impressive advance in tapping that no touchstylist should miss. As a set the books are $53.00 ($4.00 s/h, $10.00 s/h outside US).
