The Holly and the Ivy
This is a Christmas present to all touchstylists from Paul Edwards and myself. Paul and I had a few words to say about the arrangement.

Paul:
This arrangement of "The Holly and the Ivy" comes from an instrumental Christmas album I did called "Silent Night". The track starts with the melody/bass part shown here and adds more countrapuntal and harmonic parts as the melody repeats. Have fun with it.

Frank:
I was thinking of a Christmas tune to arrange and put out on the internet for touchstyle players and "The Holly and the Ivy" came to mind. I worked up an arrangement but wasn't satisfied with it. Then I remembered that Paul Edwards did a great version of this tune on his "Silent Night" Christmas album (Revere Records RR1202). So I listened to the recording and thought there was solo arrangement in there somewhere (the piece was recorded multi-tracked). I called Paul and said "what do you think"? He said sure, "just play 10ths in the left hand and a single line melody in the right hand." So we went to work and came up with this arrangement. I tried playing it in three different keys (E, A, and C major) and tried multiple fingering and positions for each key. Paul and I decided that the original key and fingering was the best sounding so we stuck with that.

Merry Christmas to all,
Paul Edwards and Frank Jolliffe
